A Board Certified Surgeon is a surgeon who has passed strict requirements in education, training and certification examinations to prove competency. Board certification requires a surgeon to be a graduate of an accredited medical school plus have a minimum of five years of training in an accredited medical residency program. The surgeon must also pass a written examination followed by an oral examination which tests the surgeon’s judgment and decision making skills. Candidates are interviewed by very experienced surgeons.

A Fellowship Trained Surgeon is a surgeon who has completed a fellowship, or additional education after the completion of residency training.

After completing medical school, a surgeon completes residency, which is 5 or more years of on-the-job training. If additional training is desired after completing the residency, a fellowship is done. After a fellowship, the surgeon is considered a specialist.
